The design of the boat will depend very much on the future use. The oil tanks can be converted to make further accomodation and working space. The engine room may also be modified. The small front cabin will remain much the same.
Westlanders
Drawings on microfiche at the museum of Westlanders that we copied on a recent trip to Rotterdam. The museum has an extensive engish book section, as well as a complete set of the Lloyds Register.
Other documents include T001481,T001480,T001177, showing the ribbing in profile 'lynenplan' to scale. done by Van Waveren 'Sheesbouw' Monster, of a Westlander Motorboot. vorden heer: G.Boekestein te 's Gravenzande
Boat for sale on Apollo Duck. A Westlander very similar to shellfen in size with the original bow shape that is common to 'most' Westlanders.Built 1913, length 14.50m. width.2.70m.It is possible to see here the height problem with the superstructure that in converting Shellfen would be similar.
The removable hatch covers idea is for the second tank. This can be either accomodation or flat deck area or open 'patio' space. Ideally three possible uses. Hatch covers with a superstructure on hydraulics?
The Tank is only 1000mm. deep so the superstructure will have to be almost 900mm. high. This could look wrong and out of proportion to the rest of the boat. Problem 1:How do you raise the roof without ruining the profile of the boat? The superstructure obscures the steering position so Problem 2: How do you raise the steering position?
Elizabeth is a narrowboat with a superstructure that might well look good on Shellfen- retaining the raised superstructure she originally had.
The information on this boat can be found at the historic ships register.

On my way back from the National Community Boats Association AGM in Walsall, stop off to just check that the aqueduct at Middlewich is indeed too narrow for Shellfen. It looks like it may be. (need to check the width of the boat 40cms above water level)
'Kasimira' Ensign 2000 narrowboat crossing. I said they couldn't be planning to go through the Harecastle, but received a suprising reply- they can because the boat has ballast tanks which they can use to lower the superstructure.

Visit London Boatshow wtih Ben and inspect a lot of the boats. The lack of crowds there meant it was easy to get to look on some of the larger and more exotic boats.
Stopover at Watford Junction to visit Cassio Wharf and Jim Macdonald to see 'Elizabeth'. The superstructure is perhaps a possible design that could be used. The interior felt suprisingly roomy and the clever use of storage to divide areas worked well reducing the 'tunnel' effect that often happens in narrowboats.
Have to replace filters in oil tank before putting in 20/20 oil. (5litres).
Find a company called Meshtex in Stockport, rotary screen engravers, who kindly cut up a larger mesh screen to use in the filters.
